Through social work and teaching, the owner of Family Friend is familiar
with agencies, resources, and techniques about which the average parent knows
little. During 25 years of experience, she has learned a great deal about
children's development and learning styles. Tailoring classroom work to the
specific needs of specific children has always been a joy and a challenge for
her, and she has frequently created materials when suitable ones could not be
easily located. She would love to share her knowledge and interest with you.
- Curriculum. This former teacher has written her own curriculum in several
areas. Students have successfully used and enjoyed these materials:
- Two art appreciation courses to suit any age (and excellent for a group
course).
- Unit resources lists
- Phonics words and sentences
- Phonics workbook
- Phonics readers
- Also coming soon: Prefix/suffix card game
- Curriculum planning and advice. This can include choosing appropriate
curriculum or creating a course of study to suit your family and your
children's interests. Many children do not fit neatly into the "average"
category. They may have learning disabilities, be difficult to motivate, or
work at different levels in different subjects. Finding the best approach for
these children may require considerable research for a novice. Many parents
do not have the time or skills to hunt for additional material on the
internet or in the library,or to create additional materials that fit the
specific needs of their children. This experienced teacher does.
- Lists of resources, including websites, books and games. These are listed
by specific topics. Many of the books are available in the public libraries
or on your children's or friend's bookshelves. Some of the games may already
be in your home or easily available to you. These will provide free or
low-cost ways to enrich or create your courses.
- Parent coaching. Many parents lack the skills, knowledge or in sight to
deal with particular problems in their children. Having an objective person
to offer advice and support is all they need to help their child. This can be
done over the telephone or by email. It is less costly than later counseling
or tutoring and doesn't require interrupting the family's schedule to
plan office visits.
