This game can be used to make students aware of the number of new words that can be made and understood by using prefixes and suffixes. By knowing the meanings of common prefixes and suffixes, a person can easily figure out the meanings of many unfamiliar words. By using these prefixes and suffixes with base words, new words can be made in the same way that words can be made from the 26 letters of the alphabet. This allows the person to increase his/her vocabulary by thousands of words without the effort of learning entirely new words with entirely new meanings. In the same way, it increases the person’s ability to spell more words.
The base words are printed in purple, prefixes are printed in red, and suffixes are printed in blue. To assist players and limit disagreements, each card contains a list of words that can be made with the base word, prefix, or suffix printed at the top. The base words were also chosen because they do not require changes to their spelling to use the prefixes and suffixes, and because the new words made can be defined using the common meanings of the prefixes and suffixes.
